Two U.S. Congress Bills Regarding Stigma of Unpaid Meals
On Monday, May 8, two companion bills were introduced in the House and the Senate addressing the stigmatization of children who are unable to pay for school meals.
U.S. Representative Kristi Noem Introduces School Meal Bill
On May 4, 2017, Representative Kristi Noem (SD-At Large) introduced H.R. 2382, or the Permanent Flexibility for Schools Act. The bill amends the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act and the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 to remove some federal nutrition requirements.
Revised Prototype Free and Reduced Price Application for SY 2017-18
USDA released a policy memo on May 3, 2017, announcing their Revised Prototype Application for Free and Reduced Price Meals for SY 2017-18.
SNA is Recognized as Partner of the Year by the National Farm to School Network
Earlier this month, as part of the National Farm to School Network’s annual meeting, SNA was recognized as the first National Partner of the Year for 2017.
USDA Creates Undersecretary for Trade
On May 11, 2017, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced the creation of an undersecretary for trade and foreign agricultural affairs, in order to address the expanding role of international trade to American agriculture.

Rhode Island Proposes Universal School Meals
A Rhode Island representative, also employed as a school teacher, has introduced legislation proposing universal school meals.
Hawaii Designates Farm to School Month
Hawaii Governor, David Ige, signed Senate Bill 882 into law on April 24. The bill designates every October as Farm to School Month in Hawaii.

Countdown to ANC: 54 Days!
Between 1996 and 1997, the Association's Executive Board voted to join the World Food Programme in a global education campaign aimed at school-aged children, and thus the Child Nutrition Forum was born. That year, 27 delegates from 23 countries around the world attended ANC on behalf of the Forum to exchange information about school feeding programs and child nutrition, as well as to network. Though today SNA’s focus is more domestic-based than international, teamwork is still important in child nutrition, and there are several education sessions at ANC 2017 that address this topic.
