A Message from Your SNA President-Elect

Dear Industry Friends,

It is an honor to serve as the SNA President-Elect this year knowing that we have real opportunities for further and more meaningful collaboration. You are an important stakeholder in the business of school nutrition, and please know you are truly valued partners. I look forward to the next two years as we work together to achieve our goals.

Three words come to mind when thinking about achieving goals together, collaboration, relationships, and connections:

Collaboration: In a partnership, you work together to achieve a common goal. To that end, a procurement ethics task force was convened in June. We heard and understand the concerns coming from Industry members and school nutrition operators. We want to make sure we collaborate professionally and with the understanding that we are all in “the business of school nutrition” and we need to work as a team. Continuous conversations with each other are important to insure we understand what each stakeholder is going through from the business perspective.

Relationships: We understand the importance of strong relationships and the ethics required in our business. The procurement ethics task force is working toward improving processes by providing suggestions and guidance to school nutrition professionals. We welcome your thoughts about this sensitive topic.

Connections: By expanding our connections and continuing to communicate in ways that build upon the great partnerships that already exist, we will realize continued growth—something that is important to all of us.

I am thankful for each of you and look forward to hearing more from you this year. Please share any ideas you may have on ways we can improve our partnerships and expand our connections.

Gay Anderson, SNS

The event, which will be held during SNA’s Legislative Action Conference (LAC), will feature some new and exciting elements. You will want to sponsor this special fundraising event for the School Nutrition Foundation (SNF) to commemorate this milestone! 1,000,000 More School Meals
Today’s a great day to be kind. This month, the School Nutrition Foundation has an exciting opportunity to receive $10,000 in funding. The funding will help the Foundation identify innovative programs and produce videos to share these ideas with schools across the nation. The entry in KIND Causes that receives the most votes will unlock the funding. You can help! Before the end of September, please consider voting for 1,000,000 More School Meals. Each vote brings us a step closer to receiving the grant. By sharing on social media, you can secure more votes for the Foundation and its 1,000,000 More School Meals Campaign. Your vote will make a difference!

Annual National Conference Reminders

ANC2018 Las Vegas Exhibit Hall Sign-up and Conference Pattern Shift Reminder
SNA’s Annual National Conference (ANC) is the “School Nutrition Event of the Year!” You don’t want to miss the upcoming 72nd Annual National Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada (July 9–12, 2018, Mandalay Bay Convention Center) and the opportunity to network with fellow exhibitors, demo your culinary expertise and meet influential decision-makers. Please note: when we bring ANC to Las Vegas, we must move our opening day ahead by one day. This is because hotels will not allow us to book large blocks of rooms over Friday and Saturday nights when they can command exorbitant rates on those evenings. Like we did in 2009, the official opening day for the conference will be on Monday instead of Sunday and the Exhibit Hall will open on Tuesday instead of Monday. The same number of exhibiting hours will be available and exhibitors with larger exhibit booths will be able to begin setting up their booths on Friday, July 6 at 2:00 pm. More information will be shared with you as we get closer to the conference.

If you haven’t done so already, visit, https://schoolnutrition.org/Meetings/ANC/2018/Exhibit-Hall-Sign-Up to see what exhibit space is still available. Deadline to receive the early bird booth rates is September 30, 2017. Contact Crystal Harper-Pierre at (800) 877-8822 ext. 140 or charper@schoolnutrition.org to reserve your booth space.

Legislative & Regulatory Update

Share Your Thoughts: Regulatory Reform
The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue, announced intentions to solicit direct and specific guidance from School Nutrition Association members for the shaping of school meal policies. Here’s your chance to do just that. Please submit your ideas in the SNA form and we’ll do the paperwork on your behalf. Your suggestions will be part of a consolidated document making recommendations to USDA on regulatory reform.

Twenty-first Release of the Child Nutrition Database by USDA
In a memo from July 27, 2017, the USDA released its twenty-first Child Nutrition Database (CN21), which is available on the Healthy Meals Resource System website for companies who develop software approved by the USDA for nutrient analyses. New in this release are fields for vitamin D and potassium, 379 new food products from the food industry, and nutrient data for 122 new USDA standardized recipes. Companies with USDA-approved nutrient analysis software are required to incorporate CN21 by August 21, 2017.
