A Message from Your SNA President-Elect
I would like to give a “shout out” to SNA’s Industry Boot Camp and tell you if you have not participated in this event, please consider doing so. As the name implies, Industry Boot Camp is fast-paced, provides school nutrition “survival skills” and “drills” down into the details of the school nutrition program to make sure participants leave the experience feeling “operationally fit.”

Unlike its name, the Industry Boot Camp provides a productive forum for various stakeholders in the school nutrition environment to come together to discuss current challenges and opportunities facing the school nutrition community. It is through these discussions among industry partners, school nutrition operators, allied partners and, of course, SNA leadership and staff that ideas, innovation, creativity and solutions for some of our greatest challenges begin to come into alignment.

If you have not participated in Industry Boot Camp, I strongly encourage you to do so. I promise, the experience will be worth the investment. If you have already participated in Boot Camp, get ready to offer feedback and suggestions about a possible level two Boot Camp that will be designed to pick up where level 1 ends. I envision an experience that will promote meaningful dialogue, practical solutions to serious problems and opportunities to create success strategies for all stakeholders who share the goal of providing nutritious, affordable, appealing meals to students and ultimately creating satisfied “customers” for life. So, be prepared; someone will be asking for your suggestions and ideas in the future for level two Boot Camp as we continue to take our work together to new heights.

On a different note…in just one month, we will convene the Annual National Conference (ANC) in Atlanta, GA. We anticipate record attendance in “Hotlanta.” The forecast for this meeting includes breakout and general sessions that address hot topics, a trade show second to none, and opportunities for networking that will build working relationships that last a lifetime…overall, I predict a sizzling opportunity for growth and development for us all! I look forward to seeing YOU there!

Sincerely,

Lynn Harvey, EdD, RDN, LDN, FAND, SNS
SNA President-Elect

Legislative & Regulatory Update

Secretary Perdue and Representative Aderholt Discuss School Nutrition at U.S. House Hearing
The House Appropriation Subcommittee on Agriculture held a hearing with USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue on May 24 regarding the Trump Administration’s 2018 budget proposal. It kicked off with subcommittee Chairman Rep. Aderholt (R-AL-4) commending Secretary Perdue for his approach to school meal nutrition standards. Aderholt pointed out that food waste was up while school meal participation was down, and that there was a need to find balance in the lunchroom. Perdue noted that the perception of his move was that it was unwinding nutrition standards, but he wanted to make it clear that they were simply taking pause and evaluating what was going on in cafeterias.

Perdue states that: “I have found that school nutrition professionals are some of the most respected people in the schools and some of the most beloved…. As we know many of our students, that’s the most basic meal they get, their school breakfast and lunch.” He goes on to say: “My strategy is to listen to those people who know best and are closest to the issue and how we can give them the flexibility to provide nutritious healthy meals in a way that doesn’t constrain them.”

Aderholt reiterated that, “School lunch personnel want to provide healthy meals to the kids; we need to be taking into consideration their perspective on the issues.” Watch a clip of this exchange on the School Nutrition Association Action Network.
