A Message from Your SNA President-elect
In early February, much of the East Coast shuttered as a winter storm piled snow onto dozens of states (In fact, as I write this, we’re totally snowbound here in Virginia!) It happens every year—though the 2016 storm was much worse than normal—and when it does, the students are thrilled but the parents go crazy. On the business end of things, schools lose revenue but still have to pay the bills, deliveries are disrupted and, at the end of it all, there’s generally a financial downtown. However, there’s a much more serious problem on snow days: kids who go hungry. With Winter Storm Jonas, thousands of meals were not accessed by the children who need them most. It was incredibly gratifying to me to see two school divisions in the Washington, D.C., area choose to open some schools to provide meals to children. It’s truly a sign of the passion of school nutrition professionals.

On a separate topic, SNIC was a great conference this year. I love listening to experts who research trends, generational differences and the future, so this was right up my alley. We had a good session on procurement, and I appreciate the work that has been done that will help us as we write our white paper. We also have a panel session planned for LAC that I believe you will enjoy. The paper is being drafted as we speak. Feedback from SNIC suggested we had all the salient points. The most important outcome will be improved success in the process.

I look forward to seeing all of you at LAC.
