A Message from Your President-Elect
I truly love this time of year—the glittering lights, joyful music, the smells of cinnamon and pine, children’s eyes as they look at packages and get ready for the Big Night, and the spirit of the season. On behalf of the members of SNA, I would like to thank each of you for your work and contributions to school nutrition. Knowing that we feed millions of children each day should give us pause to reflect on the importance of our work. Even though this is a time of celebration for many of us, we also know that many children will not have enough food for the extended break. Many communities across the United States have recognized this, and serve meals throughout the break. I am deeply appreciative of those men and women, both in industry and schools, who give their time to provide this service so unselfishly. Ours is an industry of care and concern, and our members demonstrate this day after day.

I am also pleased to report that we had a very successful procurement task force meeting, and that the white paper is in development. Our goal is to have it published by early spring. We will be doing some follow up work at SNIC gaining more input. Speaking of SNIC, I am looking forward to seeing many of you in San Diego in January. I especially enjoy this conference because it gives us a chance to see innovation, and to work on issues that confront our business. It provides wonderful networking opportunities as well.

I wish each of you a Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukah. For those who are not celebrating these holidays, may your time be spent well with family and friends. My wish for each of you is that 2016 is a memorable year with many opportunities to excel.

Becky Domokos-Bays, PhD, RD, SNS
SNA President-Elect

Legislative & Regulatory Update

State of Child Nutrition Reauthorization
Movement on drafting a new Child Nutrition Reauthorization (CNR) bill in the Congress remains up in the air at this time. As such, the SNA Public Policy and Legislation Committee (PPL), in coordination with SNA’s leadership, have determined that the originally scheduled date for drafting the 2016 SNA Position Paper on December 3-4, will be postponed. We will be keeping the Board and SNA membership apprised of any Congressional Committee discussions or other actions relative to CNR as the situation warrants. The PPL Committee will convene as soon as more information on status of CNR bills is released so that it can make informed decisions on elements to be included in the 2016 Position Paper.
