Commodities

Basic Commodity Processing
Familiarize yourself with the general terminology and concepts associated with commodity processing. USDA will share its plans to automate ordering processed end items online through ECOS. (May be of special interest to industry members)

The Life Cycle of a Commodity Delivery Order
If you receive commodities directly from USDA vendors, or if you have a district warehouse, you won’t want to miss this session. Learn the difference between planned orders and real delivery. Also, find out how to track USDA direct commodity deliveries and use ECOS to follow orders. (May be of special interest to industry members)

Become the Leader People Want to Follow

Managing Resources

Create Your Own District of Excellence
Get out your pens and take notes on what you can do to create a culture of excellence. You will hear how the two District of Excellence Awards winners achieved their success.

Disaster Planning
Join a panel of Directors, former Directors, and District Administrators as they share lessons learned during real disasters.  Forest fires, hurricanes and floods are just a few of the natural disasters that can wreak havoc in a community.  Learn how to prepare for disasters and be proactive instead of reactive. Farm to School: Improving Child Nutrition Through Collaboration
Everything you need to know about farm to school at the local, state and national levels will be covered in this comprehensive session. Topics will include discussion of how to partner with others to expand from a pilot program to a district-wide operation.

Keys to Excellence
Keys to Excellence is a streamlined, online self-assessment tool for child nutrition programs. This training session explains how district directors and supervisors can use Keys. Participants will walk away with a written plan to implement Keys in their district and begin the benchmarking process.

Money for College—An SNA Member Benefit

New Dietary Guidance: Where Are We Now?
In light of the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the MyPyramid for Kids, spreading effective nutrition messages is of critical importance. Come get acquainted with International Food Information Council Foundation’s Leader’s Guide and Kidnetic.com in this interactive forum. These resources will improve your communication of such messages when dealing with both parents and students.

Prime Purchasing Practices: Using a New Training Course for Managers and Directors
Get the hang of purchasing with Prime Purchasing Practices, an interactive approach to learning available through SNA’s Child Nutrition U. This session targets the educational needs of managers and directors in small districts to reinforce the relationship between the formal procurement process and several aspects of purchasing on a day-to-day basis.

Panel Discussion: Building Healthier Student Bodies Through Improved A La Carte & Vending Programs
Join a group of notable experts from school nutrition, vending and regulatory affairs, as they discuss proven strategies for turning your school’s a la carte and vending programs into hubs of good nutrition and profit. Safety and Security

Front Line Food Defense—Do What You Can to Develop Your Plan
It’s time to think proactively about the safety of the food you serve. In this lifesaving session you will learn who, how and why people might intentionally target your food supplies, how to assess your risk and how to prevent these intentional attacks. Arm yourself with knowledge!

Implementing Food Safety Plans in Texas Schools
This session will present experiences from various types of districts implementing HACCP-based food safety plans, including the lessons learned by districts throughout the state of Texas. Attendees will be encouraged to share their own experiences.

Time to Train Onsite or Off-Site
A panel will converse about the multiple approaches for ongoing training and verification and will reveal the many CEU-credit approved resources available in relation to sanitation, HACCP and work safety.

Wellness

Constructing Local School Wellness Policies
Dr. Lew Finch will lead an interactive and educational session designed to help provide direction for schools to develop appropriate policy health and wellness guidelines. Through group and individual interactions, attendees will leave the session understanding how to develop, implement and sustain district policy centered on promoting student wellness.

Soy 101
Discover the joys of soy from a chef/dietitian/food technologist/cookbook author. Participants will taste, smell, feel and brainstorm about soy products, learning how they can be incorporated into school menus.

Taking Action for Healthy School Environments: Promising Practices in Secondary Schools
This presentation will highlight strategies for promoting improved student nutrition, including practices implemented successfully in California middle and high schools. Also, learn about the successes, challenges  and evaluation results of the Linking Education, Activity, and Food (LEAF) grantees and other secondary schools that established local school wellness policies.
